I am merely a man; suffocated by art. I am a southern California native who loves life and all of the art in it. I grew up with a pencil in hand and an unrelenting passion for illustration. I have always been an artist. I grew up listening to rock and roll & punk rock, skateboarding & snowboarding with friends, and making art. I fell in love with tattoo art and culture at a very young age and knew I wanted to be involved and covered in tattoos.
I did my first few tattoos in 2006 while studying art in college. It wasn't until 2008 that I began tattooing full-time. I am self taught, in that I never had an apprenticeship, but I credit all of the people I've worked with, over the years, for teaching me everything I know. I've had the privilege of working alongside and befriending some of the best artists in the world and I am the artist I am today because of their influence and guidance. I am forever grateful for the friendships that this industry has provided.
In the summer of 2011, I competed in and won the title of the reality television show, "Best Ink", a tattoo competition which aired worldwide. I am fortunate enough to be an award-winning artist and to have had my art and tattoo work published in several magazines and books all over the world. I tattoo a lot of amazing people; including celebrities, lawyers, professional athletes, firemen, pastors, musicians, doctors, and more. I also host the docuseries, Backstage Ink, where I tattoo and interview celebrities, backstage, behind the scenes of their crazy lives. I constantly strive to progress, as an artist, as to strengthen my skill set and offer my clients the best possible work. The art of tattooing is sacred to me and I am honored to be able to create permanent artwork on skin.
When I am not tattooing, I am usually working on new art or traveling the world with my beautiful wife and daughter. I also enjoy surfing, traveling to far away worlds, getting lost, listening to music & going to live shows, and spending time with family & friends.
Josh Woods' early career as a musician led him in to a fascination with tattoo art. After achieving moderate success with his band and after years of touring, Woods chose to follow his true passion and pursued a career as a tattoo artist. He took on an apprenticeship in Buffalo, NY, where he worked hard to make a name for himself.
Woods is mostly known for his use of bold, bright colors and a "cartoony," illustrated style of tattooing. Along with his background in traditional work, and even a good amount of realism; Josh has become a pretty diverse artist over the years. He's been featured in numerous tattoo magazines and is also featured in bestselling books like "Tattoo Prodigies" and more. Woods also appeared on Season 1 of the hit Spike TV series, INKMASTER. He hit the international tattoo convention tour circuit for 7 years; earning respect and making a name for himself in the industry. He decided to take the big leap and opened his own shop, Black 13 Tattoo, in Nashville, Tennessee. For 8 years in a row, Woods' shop was named the #1 Tattoo Parlor in Nashville by "Nashville Scene magazine" and had a crew of heavy hitters, respected worldwide. It wasn't enough, though. Woods decided to sell his share of Black 13 Tattoo to pursue a great opportunity to move to the beautiful OC, California to work alongside friend, London Reese, the owner of The Black Lantern.
His new adventure to California is just the beginning of the next chapter of his already impressive life & career. Woods looks forward to living his dream, under palm trees and next to the ocean, with the loves of his life; his 2 english bulldogs, "Hog & Daz", and his wife Marta, by his side.
I am a California native who grew up in Los Angeles, most of my life. I spent most of my early adult years playing in a signed band touring around, playing venues of all calibers. After I hung up my instruments as a career, I dove straight into my other obsession; Art & Tattooing.
Ever since I was younger, I’ve always been a fiend for creation. If I wasn’t drawing on myself, I was drawing on paper & canvas. I attended College for graphic design and art. I started by my tattoo career in 2010 and really became a full-time artist as a career. I have worked at a few shops during my time as a tattoo artist. I am grateful to have worked at each shop because I gained tons of knowledge and skill from all the people I've worked with over the years. I strive, everyday, to be better than yesterday; in life and art. I feel so grateful for the time I've spent tattooing all my amazing clients over the years. They are the best part about this job.
When I'm not tattooing, I love being with my family and wife. Creating music, going to the movies, traveling, painting, and going to the beach.I feel so fortunate I get to do this everyday and call it my career. Stay enlightened.
