A world-class fine art and tattoo studio in Dana Point, home to internationally acclaimed, award-winning resident artists including Best Ink champion London Reese.

In the Lantern District of Dana Point, overlooking the harbor and just off Pacific Coast Highway.

How do I book with one of your artists?
Visit TheBlackLanternOC.com and complete the booking form. Specify which artist you'd like or request a match based on style.
Do you accept walk-ins?
Most sessions are appointment-only due to artist demand. However, occasional walk-in days occur—follow our Instagram for updates.
Can I choose my artist?
Yes. Each artist has unique specialties. You may request a specific artist or be paired with the best fit for your project.
PRICING & DEPOSITS
What are your studio rates?
Rates vary by artist, size, style, and project complexity. Full-day sessions are available.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes—deposits secure the appointment and go toward the final cost with most of our artists. Deposits are nonrefundable.
DESIGN & STYLE
Do your artists draw custom designs?
Every piece is custom. Our artists create original artwork tailored to your concept and anatomy.
Can you replicate a tattoo from another artist?
We avoid direct copies to maintain artistic integrity. We can create a new version inspired by your references.
What styles do you specialize in?
Realism, black and grey, color, fine line, neo-traditional, illustrative, dotwork, abstract realism, traditional, tribal/Polynesian, ornamental, and more.
COVER-UPS & REWORKS
Do you do cover-up tattoos?
Yes—our artists excel in advanced cover-up design and reworking old or poorly executed tattoos.
Can you lighten a tattoo before covering it?
We recommend a local Medical Spa that has the top of the line tattoo laser removal machine out. Contact us for more info!
PREPARATION FOR YOUR SESSION
How should I prepare for my tattoo appointment?
Rest well, hydrate, avoid alcohol, moisturize the area, and eat beforehand.
Can I bring someone with me?
We ask that clients do not bring guests as space is limited and vibes are everything.
AFTERCARE & HEALING
What aftercare method does The Black Lantern recommend?
You’ll receive a detailed aftercare plan designed for safe healing, color retention, and long-term quality.
How long will my tattoo take to heal?
Most tattoos heal in 10–18 days, depending on size and placement.
STUDIO POLICIES
Is there an age requirement?
You must be 18+ with valid ID—no exceptions.
Can I get tattooed while pregnant or breastfeeding?
For health and safety, we do not tattoo clients who are pregnant or nursing.
Are pets or children allowed?
No pets or minors allowed on the tattoo floor for safety reasons.

Do clients travel to The Black Lantern from outside the area?
Yes—many clients travel from Los Angeles, San Diego, and beyond. Hotels and restaurants are available within walking distance.
Do you offer tattoo services in Orange County?
Yes—The Black Lantern is located in Dana Point and serves all of Orange County, including Laguna Beach, San Clemente, Newport Beach, Irvine, and beyond.
Do people from LA and San Diego travel to your studio?
Absolutely. We regularly work with clients who travel from Los Angeles, San Diego, and throughout the U.S.
